Mauritius’ ambassador to the UAE, Showkutally Soodhun, has been caught up in another controversy following his recent “inappropriate” remarks. However, he denies any wrongdoing.

As a result of his latest comments, a complaint has been lodged against him by Ram Dhurmea, the former director general of the meteorological services of Mauritius.

Faizal Jeerooburkhan, an observer, notes that Soodhun must be cautious because he represents Mauritius, even worldwide. Soodhun must act as a fine diplomat, said Jeerooburkhan.

Nando Bodha said it’s typical of Soodhun to be embroiled in controversy.

Anil Gayan, the former Foreign Minister, believes that Soodhun is very emotional and must practice more restraint as an ambassador.

In July 2017, Showkutally Soodhun’s office announced Mauritius was breaking diplomatic ties with Qatar causing confusion on the international level.

Later, during July 2017, Soodhun made controversial remarks towards opposition leader Xavier-Luc Duval during a dinner, and was filmed saying he would have killed him in Parliament.

In November 2017, Soodhun resigned as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Housing and Lands after making communal remarks during a meeting with residents who opposed social housing.

In response to Ram Dhurmea’s deposition on Friday, Showkutaly Soodhun denies any wrongdoings and criticizes the use of criminal defamation laws. He expresses surprise that legal experts, including Me Glover, would suggest using such laws against him, questioning their commitment to human rights.”Geoffrey Robertson, KC, an expert in the field, has stated that this law is not compatible with a free and fair democracy,” reminded Showkutally Soodhun.
