Online Shopping Safeguards: New Laws Coming Soon
Minister of Commerce, Dorine Chukowry, has announced that amendments will be made to the Consumer Protection Act, Fair Trading Act, and Competition Act to better protect consumers, particularly those who shop online.
According to Chukowry, these reforms are essential to improving consumer protection and ensuring a fair market.
The minister emphasized that laws must keep pace with technological advancements, as online commerce has grown significantly.
“It is crucial to have better protection against fraud and deceptive advertising when it comes to online purchases,” she added.
The new regulations will require prices to be clearly displayed in Mauritian rupees, along with all additional charges, such as shipping and handling fees.
The aim is to prevent hidden charges and ensure that consumers are fully informed about the costs involved.
Chukowry emphasized that consumers who shop online will have the same rights as those who make purchases in physical stores.
She stressed that defective products can be returned with the same ease and confidence as with physical purchases.
The proposed changes aim to strengthen consumer protection by making it clearer and more transparent for individuals to make informed purchasing decisions.
