President Pradeep Roopun emphasized the importance of innovation and technology as the cornerstones of a prosperous and sustainable future, during the launch of DigiTalent 3.0 by Huawei Technologies (Mauritius) Co. Ltd.

The event was attended by the Minister of Technology, Information, Communication and Innovation, Deepak Balgobin, the Chinese Ambassador to Mauritius, Liying Zhu, Huawei Mauritius CEO, Zheng Kui, and other notable personalities.

The President highlighted that celebrating talent and innovation showcased during events like DigiTalent 3.0 underscores the central role of youth in shaping Mauritius’ future through their creativity, passion, and resilience.

“Ensuring they receive adequate support and opportunities is essential to translate their ideas into reality,” he emphasized.

The theme of the event, “LEAP – Towards a Lighter Future,” is embodying four essential pillars: leadership, education, access, and partnership.

These elements are crucial for advancing the ICT sector, equipping young people with necessary skills, ensuring access to technology, and fostering fruitful collaborations.

The President also reiterated that Mauritius has strategically positioned itself as a regional hub for ICTs, leveraging digital technologies to stimulate economic diversification, improve public services, and promote innovation.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to developing ICT infrastructure, including high-speed connectivity and fiber-optic networks, essential for digital transformation of businesses, government services, and educational institutions.

The President commended Huawei and other global players for supporting national initiatives aimed at training and improving employability, encouraging collaboration between the private sector, government, and civil society to empower the next generation in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, and advanced technologies.

Minister Balgobin emphasized Huawei’s central role in Mauritius’ digital progress, praising its commitment to training high-quality ICT talents through comprehensive ecosystems for teachers and students.

He highlighted Huawei’s global impact, training over 200,000 students annually and partnering with 2,600 universities.

The Minister also underscored Mauritius’ leading position in regional innovation, noting its first place in Africa in terms of AI readiness according to Oxford Insights.

He also mentioned the development of a national AI policy by the Mauritius Emerging Technologies Council.

Ambassador Zhu defined DigiTalent as a testament to cooperation between China and Mauritius in human resources development, recognizing Huawei’s contribution to the country’s digital development through talent cultivation in ICT this year and its proactive assumption of social responsibilities.

Huawei Mauritius CEO Zheng Kui reaffirmed the company’s strategic commitment to developing digital talents in Mauritius, focusing on creating ecosystems for teachers and students, providing industrial partners with digital skills training, and collaborating with governments on digital transformation initiatives.

Additionally, Huawei is planning to offer 4,000 ICT training opportunities in Mauritius over the next four years, focusing on AI, 5G, cloud computing, storage, and cybersecurity.

The company will also organize job fairs to improve job prospects for students and implement a recruitment strategy centered on partnerships to strengthen employment rates in the ICT sector.
