2,600 Cyber Attacks Reported in Mauritius: Young Blood in Danger
A worrying trend is unfolding in Mauritius, with a significant increase in cyber harassment and sexual extortion cases reported since the beginning of the year.
According to data from the Computer Emergency Response Team of Mauritius (CERT-MU), over 2,600 cases have been recorded since January 2024.
This alarming trend is part of an upward curve, with 3,300 cases reported in 2022 and 4,139 in 2023, revealed Minister of Technology and Innovation, Deepak Balgobin.
In response to this pressing issue, a sensitization workshop was organized to bring together key stakeholders and address the question of personal data protection in the digital age.
The aim was to educate young people, particularly secondary and university students, about the dangers of the cyber space and best practices to protect themselves.
The workshop focused on key themes, including:
- Education on data protection and digital citizenship in schools
- Integrating data protection into university programs
- Sensitizing young people to the dangers of social media and cybercrime targeting youth
- Presenting the role and functions of the National Cybercrime Fighting Committee
The workshop aimed to raise awareness among young people about the importance of protecting their personal data and online safety.
It is crucial that individuals, particularly students, understand the risks associated with the digital world and take steps to safeguard their online presence.
