Rejected from Top School: Rajen Valayden Demands Justice for Son

Rajen Valayden’s motion: Leela Devi Dookun-Luchoomun’s position awaited in court. The editor-in-chief of “Capital” magazine, Rajen Valayden, speaks about discrimination.

This resident of Stanley, Rose-Hill, laments the fact that his son did not secure a place at the Mahatma Gandhi Secondary School (MGSS) in Moka, despite performing well in the Primary School Achievement Certificate (PSAC) exams.

Rajen Valayden has lodged a motion against the Ministry of Education, which was called on Monday, 29th January 2024, in the Supreme Court, before Acting Chief Justice Nirmal Devat.

Mr. Doorgesh Kumar Manikaran, Principal State Attorney representing the ministry and Minister Leela Devi Dookun-Luchoomun, sought an adjournment to clarify the ministry’s position on the matter.

The Chief State Attorney, Rasmi Camiah, representing the Mauritius Examinations Syndicate (MES) as a co-defendant, also requested an adjournment.

The case will now be called on 12th February 2024. In his application, Rajen Valayden alleges that his son was offered a place at Ébène Secondary School, but he also learned, through a letter dated 29th December 2023, that the transfer request to MGSS Moka had been rejected.

He asks the court to order the Ministry of Education to provide him with the list of students who secured places at MGSS Moka by 12th December 2023, along with their respective results.

The plaintiff contends that his son was a victim of discrimination due to his “open criticism against the government” and “exposure of corruption” as an “investigative journalist”.
