The awarding of a Rs 136 million contract to Sotravic/Eneotech at Mare-Chicose waste disposal centre has raised concerns and sparked controversy. The allocation of the contract through Emergency Procurement is causing suspicion, as this practice is often associated with corruption.

The management of the site, which is already saturated, and the contracts aimed at improving its efficiency are causing growing unease. The decision to award this contract comes just a month after the Ministry of the Environment was considering a Rs 3 billion contract for the expansion of the centre.

Questions arise regarding the feasibility of creating additional spaces at a site that has been saturated for years, and previous reports have highlighted the dangerous conditions due to poor management.

Sunil Dowarkasing, former Global Strategist of Greenpeace, questions the allocation process and suggests that the contract may provide Sotravic with more energy sources. The waste management efforts in Mauritius, under the leadership of the Ministry of the Environment, have been deemed a failure by critics.

Joanna Bérenger, a Member of Parliament, believes there may be a hidden agenda behind the Emergency Procurement and emphasizes the need for segregation as the most effective waste management solution in Mauritius.
