Flood Victim's Brother sues Mauritius PM, DPM for Incompetence

Brother of flood victim files Private Prosecution against PM and Husnoo – Anwar Rehaz Noormahomed met a tragic end on Monday 15th January in Pailles.

The brother of Anwar Rehaz Noormahomed has taken legal action following his untimely death, swept away by floodwaters on the highway in Pailles whilst returning home on his motorcycle.

On Friday 19th January, he filed a Private Prosecution against the Prime Minister, Pravind Jugnauth, and the Deputy Prime Minister, Anwar Husnoo, at the Port Louis District Court.

In an affidavit accompanying the Private Prosecution, Asraf Noormahomed detailed the events leading up to and on the 15th January.

He accuses the Prime Minister, Pravind Jugnauth, and Minister Anwar Husnoo of “incompetence” and holds them accountable for their “failure to take timely decisions when disaster was imminent”.

Asraf Noormahomed claims to have initiated legal action in order to shed light on the tragic death of his brother.

Anwar Rehaz Noormahomed, a 53-year-old security guard, was swept away by floodwaters on the highway in Pailles whilst attempting to return home on his motorcycle on Monday.

The Noormahomed family has engaged the services of Attorney Sanjeev Teeluckdary. The case will be called Pro Forma in Court on 13th February.
