Approximately 1,000 litres of heavy oil have leaked into the environment from the Marine Biotechnology Products reservoir pipeline in Riche-Terre, reaching Pont Brunikel in Baie-du-Tombeau.

Ministry of Environment officials and members of the Special Mobile Force have visited the site to assess the damage.

Brian NG, a village councilor, reported on his visit and the strong odor in the area.

Marine Biotechnology Products issued a statement stating that they are coordinating an environmental response after the fuel leak caused by storm drains overflowing due to cyclone Belal.

They have taken immediate action, deploying floating barriers and cleaning teams to contain and recover the fuel.

They are working with government and private sector experts to assess ecological impacts and implement additional measures.

The Mauritius Ports Authority, Ministry of Environment, Special Mobile Force, and National Coast Guard are providing assistance, along with experts from Polygreen, Virgin Oil, Total, and Petro.
