Le Mauricien newspaper has claimed it is now clear why Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Local Government, Anwar Husnoo, hurried to adopt amendments to the Local Government Act: To secure the process of declaring vacant municipal and village council seats.

After the Flacq District Council, political tremors are reportedly now also being felt at the Pamplemousses district council, where the leadership team is said to be in an uncomfortable position.

Recent reports suggest a potential political defection by Chairperson Kalicharan Soomaroo, who is said to have made contact with individuals within the opposition.

He is allegedly in communication with a leader of the Labour/MMM/PMSD alliance.

In any case, the developments within the 18 villages of the North are worth following in early 2024.
