Stormy Start to 2024: Tropical Depression Threatens Mauritius Celebrations

A tropical depression forming on the East coast of Madagascar may disrupt New Year’s celebrations in Mauritius.

The Mauritius Meteorological Services (MMS) has issued a Heavy Rain Watch alert on Sunday 10am, stating that heavy rain and the risk of cyclonic activity are expected in the coming days.

A low-pressure system approaching from the east coast of Madagascar will bring showers to the region starting this Sunday, 31 Dec 2023, and passing south of Mauritius on Tuesday, 2 January.

Thunderstorms are likely, with showers becoming more frequent on Tuesday.

Additionally, intense heat has been experienced in recent days, due to a north wind blowing at 15 km/h.

The MMS anticipates this heat will continue until the end of summer, with temperatures reaching 29 to 32°C along the coast.

The sea will be moderate beyond the reefs, with swells of about 2metres and becoming rough from Monday to Wednesday, according to the Vacoas meteorological station.
