Port Louis: Threat of a General Strike as Early as January 3
The Port-Louis Maritime and Employees Association (PLMEA) is threatening to go on a general strike in early January.
They are disappointed with the lack of response from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) regarding their concerns.
The Cargo Handling Corporation Ltd (CHCL) is also experiencing tensions as port employees have not received any clarification about promotions that were supposed to take place weeks ago.
A previous attempt to disrupt port activities occurred two weeks ago, and now employees are considering more serious actions starting from January 3rd.
The PLMEA negotiator, Gerard Bertrand, explains that the port situation is tense and many employees are awaiting promotions, which is why they believe a general strike is necessary.
The collective agreement states that promotions should consider seniority, but the CHCL management has prepared another promotion list, causing frustration among employees.
Despite informing the PMO about the situation, there has reportedly been no response, leading the PLMEA to consider a general strike starting on January 3.
