Concerns raised over vertical expansion of Mare-Chicose landfill project

The proposed vertical expansion of the Mare-Chicose landfill project in Mauritius is facing concerns and opposition within the government.

The project, estimated to cost over Rs 3 billion, has raised environmental concerns due to its potential ecological implications and serious environmental repercussions.

The leader of Muvman Liberater (ML), Ivan Collendavelloo, has expressed reservations about the project, stating that it could turn Mare-Chicose into a “skyscraper of waste” instead of utilising it for energy production.

Environmentalists and government officials have also raised concerns about the long-term saturation of the site and the already existing environmental issues, such as toxic waste infiltration and contamination of groundwater.

They believe that the vertical expansion may lead to an unprecedented ecological disaster.

Suggestions for alternative solutions, such as adopting a circular economy approach and implementing waste management initiatives, have been proposed to address the issue.
