Layoff of 300 Workers: ENL Urged to Respect Verdict

Political activist Bruneau Laurette, also a member of One Moris, has taken a stance in support of the 300 employees of Building & Civil Engineering Co Ltd (BCE) who have been made redundant.

BCE was once one of the largest construction companies on the island. It was placed in to liquidation last year following unsuccessful attempts to obtain funds from banks to keep afloat.

He labelled the situation as a “human tragedy” and criticised the Minister of Labour’s silence on the matter.

Laurette urged the owner to adhere to the decision made by the Redundancy Board, which sided with the employees and mandated compensation of three months’ salary for each year of service.
