Residents say 'NO' to construction of 250 social houses near school

Residents of the Réunion Maurel neighborhood in Petit-Raffray, Goodlands, are up against the construction of 250 NHDC apartment blocks in their village, particularly near Goodlands SSS (Boys).

The spokesperson for the protesters, Hitesh Varma Santhokhee, argues that the project could exacerbate water shortages and drug-related issues in the area.

Residents added that they have been facing water scarcity for a long time, despite efforts by the Central Water Authority to repair the ageing pipes.

They feel neglected and claim that authorities did not consult them before initiating the housing project.

Residents are said to have sought the help of local Members of Parliament, but they were reportedly told that the project falls under the “Capital Project category” and is beyond their control.

However, the residents said they are unsatisfied with “bureaucratic explanations”.
