12,000 Social Housing Units: It’s on!

Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth has marked the start of a housing initiative by laying the foundation for 200 social housing units in Pointe-aux-Piments. This project is part of a larger plan to construct a total of 12,000 social housing units.

Despite acknowledging challenges, the Prime Minister expressed determination to overcome obstacles. The first phase, which involves building 8,000 units, began in Souillac on May 24.

An additional 4,000 units are planned for the second phase.

The Prime Minister highlighted the increasing difficulty for modest families to afford homes due to inflation and higher construction material costs.

The Housing and Lands Minister, Steven Obeegadoo, noted that the 200 houses in Pointe-aux-Piments will be constructed on a 10-acre site at a cost of Rs 548 million.

Of these units, 10% will be allocated to the impoverished and 4% for individuals with disabilities. The housing initiative aims to address the pressing need for affordable housing in the country.
