Political activist to spend New Year in Mauritius prison over drug charges

Political activist Bruneau Laurette will spend the new year at Mauritius’ Melrose Prison. This was decided by the Bail & Remand Court (BRC) after he appeared via video conference this Monday morning, 26 December over debates on release on bail.

The activist was remanded to the said prison until 16 January.

During the hearing, Laurette asked to file a complaint against the Special Striking Team (SST) at the Independent Police Complaints Commission

The STT had raided his house and arrested him on November 4 during which some 46 kilos of hashish and two firearms (one found to be a fake) were seized during the raid.

Laurette has claimed his innocence, alleging that the drugs had been planted by the SST.
