Mauritius police books over 4,300 traffic offenders in one week

Traffic police have reportedly issued a historic amount of 4,311 tickers to motorists for various traffic violations from October 5 to 11, 2022.

Some 2,989 offenders were given a “Fixed Penalty”, 400 motorists were booked for speeding while 20 motorists were tested positive for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Concerns about road safety are growing after 16 road accidents were recorded between 01 September to 12 October 2022.

Out of the 16 victims, 11 were aged under 35 years (69%). According to reports, the recent accidents involved mainly youngsters and two-wheelers.

Authorities said they will soon embark on an intensive road safety campaign during the months of November and December 2022. Campaigns would be conducted on the MBC TV and radio and private radios.

Extensive crackdown operations are also being planned during this period targeting mainly speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs and intoxicating substances.
