After eight years, the wages and conditions of employment in the Mauritian tourism sector will be reviewed and amended.

The Ministry of Labour has announced that it has initiated the process of reviewing the Catering and Tourism Industries (Remuneration) Regulations.

The matter was referred to the National Remuneration Board a few days ago- it has been mandated to work on the new terms and conditions, and expects business, labour and other employee representatives to submit their full proposals by October 21.

Yet, reports claim that better work conditions are no guarantee that Mauritians will turn to hotel and tourism jobs again – many having been made redundant in controversial circumstances while the borders were closed.

At the same time, major players in the sector are said to be pressing for the recruitment of foreign labour. According to them, at least 2,500 positions need to be filled urgently.
