President needs to 'wake up from slumber', say social activists

The President of the Republic Prithviraj Roopun is being asked to “wake up from his slumber and act.”

“You just have to say NO. The President of the Republic has the power, in consultation with the Prime Minister to take the police force to task”, Neena Ramdenee of Linion Pep Morisien (LPM) was cited as telling Defi Media.

She was among a group of social activists and NGOs who led a Candlelight protest in front of the official residence of the President in Réduit on Sunday.

President Prithviraj Roopun has not commented on the torture videos since they went viral last week.

“The President cannot sit and watch quietly. He has a role to play and he needs to wake up,” Neena Ramdenee said.

“Everyone has a family. We are parents. We know what human right is. Police must not act as torturers. This happened to one family. Tomorrow, it could happen to yours.”
