May 1st: Navin Ramgoolam Unveils Game-Changing Solutions for Mauritius

On May 1st, Labour Day rally in Port-Louis, Navin Ramgoolam – Leader of the PTr-MMM-ND alliance, declared the urgent need for real change to save the country.

Ramgoolam introduced a series of key measures that the alliance plans to implement, including:

  • Free public transport for all, including school vans
  • Free internet for every family
  • One-year maternity leave
  • Introduction of “Menstrual leave”
  • Revision of fuel taxation to lower gasoline and diesel prices
  • Reverting to the previous criteria of needing 3 credits for admission to Grade 12 leading to the HSC (Higher School Certificate)
  • One-off registration fees only for the purchase of a new vehicle
  • Electoral reform with at least one-third of women on party candidate lists for general elections and a sound law on political party financing
  • Election of the President by an electoral college and an independent and impartial Speaker of the National Assembly guaranteed by the Constitution
  • Replacement of the Financial Crimes Commission with a powerful anti-corruption institution
  • Anti-defection law and introduction of the Freedom of Information Act
  • Abolition of the Rs 150 fee and introduction of private television
  • Abolition of tax on income below Rs 1 million

Navin Ramgoolam urged all Mauritians to “participate in the reconstruction of Mauritius,” emphasizing the upcoming election’s significance.

He compared it to the epic Indian myth “Mahabharata,” stressing the importance of voting wisely and not let one’s vote go to waste.
