FCD to Examine Navin Ramgoolam’s Trial
The Financial Crimes Division retains jurisdiction to hear the case brought against Navin Ramgoolam for alleged overpayments.
This was the ruling made by magistrates Abdool Raheem Tajoodeen and Bibi Razia Janoo-Jaunbocus this morning, April 3rd.
The decision follows a motion filed by former Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam, who challenged the jurisdiction of the FCD to preside over the case against him.
His lawyer, Senior Counsel Gavin Glover, argued that there was no directive authorizing the transfer of his client’s case from the Intermediate Court to the FCD. The case will be called again on May 6, 2024.
The leader of the Labour Party faces twenty-three charges of overpayments under Article 5 of the Financial Intelligence and Anti-Money Laundering Act.
It is alleged that he received Rs 63.8 million in cash over a period of six years, from January 31, 2009 to February 7, 2015.
