Decision was communicated at the hearing of the case on March 28, 2024, before Acting Deputy Master and Registrar, Pranay Sewpal. Former Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam’s claim for Rs 225 million will be heard in depth on January 16, 2025, in the Supreme Court.

The complaint is directed against the State, the Commissioner of Police, and the former Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Heman Jangi.

It has been five years since Navin Ramgoolam filed his complaint in the Supreme Court on February 4, 2019.

In the document in question, the leader of the PTr recounts his first arrest on February 6, 2015, by the Central Criminal Investigation Department (CCID).

This followed the search of his residences on Desforges Street and River-Walk, and the seizure of his assets, including safes containing Rs 220 million.

He also mentions being arrested multiple times and having to provide bail each time to regain his freedom.

The former Prime Minister claims that these arrests have caused him harm and prejudice.

He asserts that he was treated as a repeat offender and was degraded in the eyes of the public as a result of his arrests, hence his claim for damages.

It is worth noting that on March 14, 2024, the State, the Commissioner of Police, and the former ACP Heman Jangi, named as defendants in the complaint, suffered a setback in the Supreme Court.

They had requested the dismissal of the claim arguing that it did not disclose any valid cause, as at the time of the events, Navin Ramgoolam was under judicial control and not administrative.

They believed that their liability was not engaged. However, the Supreme Court, deeming the defendants’ argument invalid, did not uphold the point raised.

In this case, Navin Ramgoolam is represented by Senior Counsels Gavin Glover and Robin Ramburn. They are assisted by Me Shaukat Oozeer and Senior Attorney Bhooneshwar Sewraj.
