Electric Batteries Soon to be Manufactured in Mauritius

NextSource Materials Inc. (NSM), a battery materials development company based in Toronto, Canada, is eyeing a move to Mer-Rouge with ambitious plans to become a global supplier of batteries and technological materials for a sustainable energy revolution.

In a strategic move, the company has chosen Molo Graphite Mining, a mining firm based in Madagascar, to export a portion of the graphite ore extracted to Mauritius.

Annually, at least 3,600 tons of graphite will be processed for battery manufacturing, which will subsequently be exported.

Graphite plays a crucial role in lithium batteries, predominantly at the negative end, known as the anode. A modern electric vehicle battery typically contains about 1.2 kilograms of graphite flakes.

While graphite deposits are not rare, sourcing high-quality materials for battery production is becoming increasingly challenging.

According to an official document detailing the project, it’s planned that around 8,000 tons of flake graphite will be received annually at the Mauritius Container Terminal, alongside imported chemicals.

Processing this graphite into specialized forms will yield graphite fines and solid waste, managed according to environmental regulations.

The importation, handling, and distribution of acids will be overseen by a local accredited supplier, ensuring a steady supply to the battery anode facility.

Strict adherence to the Dangerous Drugs Act of 2004 will govern the storage and handling of chemicals, with measures in place for spillage control and management.

The project emphasizes safety protocols, with the chemical storage area restricted to authorized personnel and equipped with spillage prevention and response plans.

Communication channels with relevant authorities, including fire services, environmental agencies, and port authorities, will be established to ensure swift and effective responses to any emergencies.

Upon operationalization of this unit, the promoter aims to employ approximately one hundred individuals, contributing to local employment and economic growth.

The project marks a significant step towards establishing Mauritius as a key player in the global battery materials supply chain, supporting efforts towards sustainable energy solutions.
