Scientists are on the verge of saving the Dodo from extinction, thanks to their “incredible progress”. The once-hunted, flightless bird faced extinction on its native island of Mauritius 350 years ago.

However, recent advancements in DNA sequencing have allowed scientists to completely sequence the species using DNA from a museum skull.

This breakthrough has paved the way for the development of genetically modified chickens that could potentially serve as surrogate mothers for dodo embryos.

The US-based company, Colossal Biosciences, has partnered with the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation to locate a suitable site for the dodo’s reintroduction.

Dr. Beth Shapiro, a prominent member of Colossal’s Scientific Advisory Board, expressed her enthusiasm for the project, stating that humans were responsible for the dodo’s demise due to habitat destruction.

Dr. Shapiro, who has dedicated her career to genetic advances in ancient DNA, was elated to play a role in eradicating the dodo extinction and reintroducing the species into the wild.

In a related event, a rare dodo skeleton was recently auctioned off at Summers Place Auctions in West Sussex.
