The vigilance of the customs officers of the Customs Anti Narcotics Section and the detectives of the Anti Drug & Smuggling Unit has once again paid off at the arrival hall of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Airport in Plaisance.

Upon disembarking from an Air Mauritius flight, the MK 852, on February 15th, South African mule François Jacobus De Plessis, who had 13.4 kilograms of cannabis in his possession, was intercepted. The street value of the drugs is said to be worth around Rs16 million.

The drugs, hidden in six plastic packages covered with paper and carefully sealed with adhesive tape, were discovered during an X-ray examination. The customs sniffer dog reacted by sniffing out the packages.

A Field Test confirmed that the substance was cannabis. The seized drugs will be sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory in Réduit for analysis. The drug smuggler was questioned by the anti-drug squad. A controlled delivery operation was set up in a coastal village in the East, but the mastermind did not show up.

François Jacobus De Plessis has been placed under arrest. He will be charged with drug importation this Monday in front of the Mahébourg court. The investigation by the anti-drug squad is ongoing.
