Health Survey: Revealing Shocking Teen Tobacco Use Statistics

The Cabinet has been informed that the Ministry of Health and Wellness will be conducting the Global Youth Survey (GYTS) for Mauritius and Rodrigues in February and May 2024, respectively.

The GYTS is a school-based survey carried out in over 188 countries by the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention in the USA, in collaboration with the World Health Organization.

The GYTS will target students aged 13 to 15 in selected secondary schools in Mauritius and Rodrigues.

The survey aims to assess the prevalence of tobacco use among school students, their knowledge and attitudes towards tobacco use, as well as their exposure to pro-tobacco activities and environmental tobacco smoke.

It will also gather data on the extent, patterns, causes, and effects of tobacco use and exposure to tobacco smoke.
