Following the passage of Cyclone Belal in Port-Louis, cleaning services are working to collect wastes in the city’s streets.

Approximately 1.2 tonnes of waste, mainly consisting of bottles, bags, and other plastic objects, has already been collected.

The cleanup operations have been ongoing for over a week and are continuing throughout the city, with teams currently working in the Tranquebar region.

Additionally, 500 tonnes of waste have been collected from the Port-Louis Waterfront, including not only plastic rubbish but also items like refrigerators, mattresses, and washing machines.

Authorities condemn the incivility of some residents and call for more disciplined waste management.

On another note, although an inquiry recommended the demolition of certain structures in the aftermath of the deadly floods in 2013, the demolition is unlikely to happen soon due to unspecified constraints.
