Cyclone Belal Wreaks Havoc: Over 75% of Plantations Devastated
Over 75% of plantations have been affected by the aftermath of cyclone Belal, with water accumulating in the fields and causing significant damage to vegetable crops.
This widespread situation is due to heavy rains and water accumulation experienced throughout the country.
The Centerwest Small Planters Association reports that the crops have been almost completely destroyed, although there is some relief as protected crops have not been as severely affected.
The Chamber of Agriculture of Mauritius has also assessed the impact of the cyclone, observing damage to roads, fallen trees blocking passages, and the washing away of crops and fertile land by flooded rivers.
The extent of the damage caused by water accumulations will depend on their duration. Agronomists and employees are currently touring the affected areas, with the Chamber of Agriculture set to provide more details on the cyclone’s impact in the coming days.
Meanwhile, members of the Chamber of Agriculture are working alongside authorities to clear roads and identify at-risk public areas.
Consequently, an increase in vegetable prices and potential product scarcity can be anticipated.
