In January, the Passenger Fee in Mauritius has seen a significant 71% increase, causing concerns among tour operators.

This rise, following the recent issues with Air Mauritius flights and chaos at the airport, has frustrated foreign visitors.

The fee has jumped from $35 to $60 for each adult staying on the island, provoking anger and fears among tourists and operators about its impact on arrivals.

France, a key market for Mauritian tourism, has been shocked by the news.

The increase, initially announced in July 2023 for implementation on January 1, 2024, went unnoticed at the time.

The island, heavily reliant on tourism and still recovering from Cyclone Belal, is striving to regain stability.

The association has raised concerns about the hike with Deputy Prime Minister and Tourism Minister Steven Obeegadoo, particularly emphasizing the issue of retroactivity.
