Rama Sithanen, former Minister of Finance and former executive of Air Mauritius, has called for urgent action to revive the national airline.

Speaking on the show “Au cœur de l’info,” Sithanen criticized the mistakes made by previous management, including fleet reduction and the destruction of the destination network.

He highlighted Air Mauritius’ importance in tourism, freight transport, nation-building, and as a safety net for the country.

Sithanen identified strategic mistakes made during voluntary administration, such as short-term decision-making and lack of long-term planning.

He also criticized the reduction of the airline’s fleet and the destruction of its destination network. Furthermore, he mentioned the departure of experienced individuals and the alienation of customers through delays and cancellations.

Sithanen stressed the need to find suitable aircraft, rebuild the network, restore trust, remove politics from the company, and place competent individuals in key positions.

While not in favor of privatization, he suggested increased cooperation with other airlines and forming strategic alliances.

He expressed doubts about the creation of Airport Holdings Ltd, which owns the airline, and called for long-term strategic thinking to ensure the survival and prosperity of Air Mauritius.
