The Supreme Court has upheld the majority of points presented by opposition MP Arvind Boolell against Speaker Sooroojdev Phookeer and Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth.

Boolell is challenging his expulsion and suspension from parliament and has filed a case against the Speaker and Prime Minister.

The defense argued against the prosecution’s claims of impartiality and bias on the part of the Speaker, stating that Boolell had violated Supreme Court rules, and that events from three months prior to the expulsion could not be referenced.

However, the Supreme Court found the defense arguments insufficient and upheld Boolell’s majority of points.

The case will now proceed before the Master and Registrar on February 8 to determine the next steps.

Boolell’s indefinite suspension by the Speaker, who previously served as Campaign Manager for the MSM in the 2019 general elections, has been contested by the opposition MP due to their alleged close relationship.
