Consumer Associations Demand Urgent Revision of Fuel Prices

The Association of Consumers in Mauritius (ACIM) has urged Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth to bring down fuel prices.

The ACIM argues that the price of petrol should have decreased since January, as the global price of oil has been consistently falling.

However, the government amended the law to avoid passing on the decrease to consumers.

The ACIM calls this unfair and unacceptable, citing the current petrol price of Rs 74 per liter and diesel price of Rs 54.55 per liter, set when oil was at USD 120 per barrel, compared to the current price of USD 79.

The association also highlights that other countries with higher average salaries sell fuel at much lower prices.

Additionally, the ACIM criticised the surtax on petroleum products in Mauritius and calls for the resignation of the director of the State Trading Corporation.

They further express frustration with the national television station, MBC, for not providing a platform for a balanced debate on petroleum product prices.

Another letter has been sent to the director of MBC requesting a fair discussion on fuel prices.
