In a horrifying incident on the Pailles highway in Mauritius, a heavy goods vehicle crashed into an electrical pylon before colliding with multiple other vehicles, resulting in several injuries and vehicles being engulfed in flames.

The incident caused a significant traffic jam in the affected section of the highway, and the injured victims were promptly taken to Dr Jeetoo Hospital for medical attention.

Bystanders could only watch helplessly as the vehicles were consumed by the raging fire.

According to the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mukhtar-Din Taujoo, the accident was caused by faulty brakes on the lorry.

The driver reported that the brakes failed, causing the collision with a 4×4 that ended up on the opposite side of the highway.

Additional vehicles were damaged in the process, and a fire ensued. Fortunately, individuals trapped in the burning vehicles managed to evacuate safely.

Currently, only two lanes towards Port-Louis are accessible, with some debris still present at the accident scene.

DCP Taujoo said that the situation could have been much worse, expressing gratitude that the accident wasn’t more severe.

Five patients were transferred to Jeetoo Hospital, and their conditions are said to be stable. The public pedestrian bridge connecting both sides of the road has been closed due to observed cracks.

Suraj Khedoo, the assistant driver of the truck involved, told Defi Media that he narrowly escaped death, recounting the terrifying experience of the collision and subsequent chaos.
