Export Oriented Enterprises: Job Losses and Fluctuating Trade in 3Q 2023
In the third quarter of 2023, Export Oriented Enterprises (EOE) saw a decrease in the total number of employees by 1.4% compared to the previous quarter.
There were 815 job losses due to workforce reduction, but 317 new jobs were created through the expansion of existing enterprises.
The employment of both Mauritian citizens and foreign workers also decreased slightly.
EOE exports increased by 5.4% compared to the previous quarter to reach Rs12.6 billion but decreased by 6.6% compared to the same quarter in the previous year.
EOE imports, however, amounted to Rs6.2billion – 14.6% lower than the second quarter of 2023 and 28.6% lower than the third quarter of 2022.
