The Maldivian administration, led by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, has taken an unexpected stance against the International Tribunal of the Law of the Sea’s (ITLOS) decision on a disputed maritime border with Mauritius.

A dedicated committee, headed by former Attorney General Mohamed Anil, has been established to seek a review of the decision.

The administration claims that the previous government’s position was unconstitutional and harmful to national interests.

The committee, operating under the ‘Hafuthaa 14’ roadmap initiative, is reviewing all relevant documents and consulting with legal experts to reassess the state’s legal stance and past actions in the dispute.

Attorney General Ahmed Usham is preparing a report on the previous administration’s legal strategies, which will be submitted to President Muizzu and the Parliament.

The President’s Office has highlighted a letter from former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth, in which Solih acknowledged Mauritius’ sovereignty over the Chagos archipelago.

However, Solih maintained that this acknowledgment did not impact the Maldives’ legal stance on the overlapping maritime territories, which is now being debated.
