Controversial Bill Voted With Amendments
The Financial Crimes Commission (FCC) has been voted with some minor amendments.
Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth has defended the FCC, arguing that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) does not have a monopoly on starting criminal proceedings.
During two hours, he highlighted that other authorities can initiate criminal procedures in district courts as long as the Constitution allows them to do so and provided the powers are conferred by relevant legislation.
Thus, the bill was adopted with amendments, appealing to the tracking of the most severe financial crimes.
The National Assembly also approved recommendations for the reconstitution of constituencies ratified by the Electoral Boundaries Commission.
