The Excise License Fee for wholesalers of alcohol in Mauritius will triple, increasing from Rs 6,000 to Rs 18,000.

Retailers will also see price increases, with some reaching up to Rs 12,000.

The new fee structure, announced by the Mauritius Revenue Authority, will take effect in January 2024.

This measure is part of the latest budget exercise. The annual license fees for distributors and resellers of alcoholic products are on the rise, with some prices doubling or tripling.

The fee increases for different establishments vary, with boutiques paying Rs 8,000, restaurants paying Rs 10,000, and hotels, guest houses, private clubs, and nightclubs paying Rs 4,000.

Casinos and gaming houses face the largest increase, with annual fees set at Rs 12,000.

Authorities are cautioning against businesses illegally passing on the fee increase to consumers.

Previously, alcoholic beverage prices had already seen a 10% increase as a result of the 2023/2024 budget.
