PM announces electoral boundary changes ahead of 2024 general election

The Prime Minister of Mauritius has unveiled an agenda for the upcoming general elections with the presentation of a resolution to give legal force to the constituency redistricting with the adoption of the 2020 Electoral Boundaries Commission report.

If approved, these boundaries will take effect from the next dissolution of Parliament.

The report corrects the constituency boundaries established in 1999, taking into account changes in population, movement and real estate, and industrial developments.

The first electoral boundary report was carried out in 1976, with the current report the fifth overall.

The Prime Minister has stated that the next legislative elections could be organised on the basis of the voters’ registers compiled by the Electoral Commission at the beginning of each year.

The opposition has expressed reservations about the timing of the report, with some believing that the document is being brought forward now, just a year before the general election, to benefit the incumbent party’s chances of winning.

Critics on both sides of the political spectrum have raised concerns over the short period to implement the new constituency boundaries and the limited time to familiarise themselves with the changes.
