Opposition MP’s accusations of Speaker’s Bias Investigated

Government MP Vikash Nuckcheddy has brought attention to an interview given by opposition MP Karen Foo Kune-Bacha, which he believes casts doubt on the credibility of the Speaker of the National Assembly.

Foo Kune-Bacha stated in an interview published in l’express-dimanche on December 3 that, “Sooroojdev Phokeer is a supporter of MSM, he plays for MSM’s team, he is an MSM agent! There is not even a semblance of neutrality in him.”

The Speaker has raised concerns that these words, as cited in the interview, may constitute an offence under the National Assembly (Privileges, Immunities, and Powers) Act, which criminalises accusations of the Speaker’s bias.

The matter has been referred to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for investigation.
