David Snoxell, the former British High Commissioner to Mauritius, disagrees with British government officials who oppose the return of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius due to their alleged closeness to China.

Snoxell argues that Mauritius’ closest ties are with India and maintains good relations with the UK, US, and France.

He cites the government’s response, stating that America fully supports the bilateral negotiations.

Snoxell refutes the claim that Mauritius’ relationship with China jeopardizes the UK-US “special relationship” and asserts that the ongoing negotiations pertain to sovereignty and the long-term future of the Diego Garcia base.

He reminds readers that in 2019, the International Court of Justice deemed the separation of the Chagos Islands from Mauritius in 1965 illegal.

Snoxell emphasizes that the ICJ decision, along with a UN resolution, necessitate a negotiated settlement to avoid accusations of double standards.
