More Work Needed to Protect Privacy Rights, Says UN Rapporteur

According to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Privacy, Ana Brian Nougrerès, there is still a lot of work to be done regarding the implementation of privacy rights in Mauritius.

During her visit to the country, Nougrerès examined issues related to data protection, cross-border data sharing, cybersecurity, surveillance, and artificial intelligence.

She highlighted the need for better control and emphasized the importance of introducing an international framework on privacy.

Although Mauritius has taken steps to address drug trafficking through measures like installing surveillance cameras and re-registering SIM cards, concerns have been raised by civil society regarding data collection and security.

Nougrerès stressed the importance of adopting technological innovations with a human rights-based approach.
