Mobile operators assure data security during SIM card re-registration

The three mobile operators in the country have given assurances that customers’ personal data will be encrypted and only accessible with a court order.

The statement was made during a press conference held on Monday, October 30 in response to concerns from citizens.

Starting Tuesday, October 31, 2023, SIM card holders in Mauritius have six months to re-register their cards.

The Information and Communication Technologies (Registration of SIM) Regulations 2023 will come into effect in accordance with the recommendations of the Commission of Inquiry on Drug Trafficking.

The main objective of this initiative is to ensure that every SIM card used is registered under the user’s name to protect subscribers against various types of fraud, identity theft, and other malicious activities.

Customers can re-register their SIM cards online or in-person at their respective mobile operators’ offices.
