Mauritius Receives 51,840 Doses of Pfizer’s Vaccine from US
Mauritius has received its fourth donation of 51,840 doses of Pfizer bivalent COVID-19 vaccines from the United States of America (US). The ceremony, held at the Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, saw the presence of key figures including the Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr. Kailesh Jagutpal, and the US Ambassador to Mauritius, Mr. Henry Jardine.
The donation, said to be a result of ‘close collaboration’ between the US Government, the Government of Mauritius, and the COVAX Facility, raises eyebrows about the underlying intentions.
The Health Minister’s statement raises questions about the specificity of the Pfizer bivalent vaccines, claiming they target various strains, including BA.4 and BA.5, and subvariants of Omicron.
Skeptics wonder about the real effectiveness of these vaccines against the ever-evolving virus.
The allocation strategy, reserving the vaccines primarily for those with comorbidities, cancer, dialysis patients, and the elderly, has drawn scrutiny.
As the Minister urges vulnerable individuals to get vaccinated, questions arise about the potential coercion or pressure being applied to those who may be hesitant.
