Former Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam is set to face a new trial in the Safe Case, with 23 charges of excessive payments totaling Rs63.8 million. The trial will take place before the Financial Crimes Division (FCD) of the Intermediate Court, with 35 witnesses summoned for the proceedings. Legal motions are to be presented during this session. The case had initially been dismissed in 2019 but was reinstated by the Supreme Court in 2022. Navin Ramgoolam’s subsequent appeal to the Privy Council was denied in July 2023.
