Official Figures Contradict Navin Ramgoolam's Claims on Voter Numbers

Official figures provided by the Electoral Commissioner’s Office contradict the claims made by former Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam on the number of registered voters per constituency.

“I find these matters strange. The number of registered voters in constituency No. 8 (Quartier-Militaire/Moka), was 43,811 in 2022 and had risen to 48,611 in 2023. This would imply an increase of 4,800 voters,” he had told the political meeting in Vacoas last week.

On constituency No. 5 (Pamplemousses/Triolet), he had asserted that there were 64,546 voters in 2022, and 70,269 in 2023, a difference of 5,723. “We need to keep a close watch on the Bangladeshis who come to vote again,” he had claimed.

However, official figures from the Electoral Commissioner’s Office indicate that in constituency No. 8, the number of voters was 47,819 in 2022, rising to 48,611 in 2023, implying an increase of 792 voters. Regarding constituency No. 5, the official number of voters was 68,671 in 2022, rising to 70,269 in 2023.

According to Defi Media, 1,724 foreigners from Commonwealth countries are registered as voters: 937 Indians, 232 Bangladeshis, 191 South Africans, 119 Brits and others.
