A 40-year-old Mauritian man was arrested yesterday at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, Plaisance, for illegally importing birds.

The man who arrived on flight MK852 from South Africa, was detained by Customs Anti-Narcotics Section officers after his luggage was screened and found to be suspicious.

A total of 44 birds of unknown species were discovered in small wooden and plastic cages hidden within the man’s luggage.

During his interrogation, the man claimed to be the owner of a pet store, but he failed to produce a permit for importing birds.

He was subsequently handed over to the police, while the case was transferred to the veterinary services.

The birds, meanwhile, have been sent to the Quarantine Services Division for further examination and care.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to determine the origin and intended destination of the illegally imported birds.

This incident is highlighting the importance of strict enforcement of customs regulations and the need for individuals to comply with laws related to wildlife trade and conservation.
