Mauritius Regulator Orders National TV to Say ‘Sorry” to Ex-Minister

The Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) has instructed the Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) to issue an apology to former Minister of Social Security, Vishnu Bundhun.

This directive stems from MBC’s recent broadcast of a statement by the Minister of Arts and Cultural Heritage, Avinash Teeluck, during a news bulletin.

“The Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation is hereby directed to broadcast an unreserved apology with the reasons thereof together with the stand of the Authority in its Samachar Bulletin of 18h on 14 August 2023 on MBC TV1,” the IBA’s ruling reportedly read.

The controversy arose when MBC aired Minister Teeluck’s statement, which claimed that former Minister Vishnu Bundhun had a past conviction for corruption.

Bundhun asserts that this statement is false and points to a Supreme Court judgment that ruled in his favour. Consequently, he has demanded that MBC correct this misinformation.
