Mauritius Taxi Drivers: “The Minister Has Betrayed Us”

“Alan Ganoo has betrayed us. There’s utter chaos.” These are the sentiments echoed by members of the Taxi Proprietors’ Union and the Northern Taxi Association.

They are frustrated over the lack of transparency regarding the monthly Rs 300 contribution to the Taxi Operators Welfare Fund and are condemning the authorities’ handling of this fund.

Taxi drivers who do not register with this fund now risk the suspension of their permits by the National Land Transport Authority (NLTA).

“If you don’t pay, the NLTA will come after you. There’s no escaping the Welfare Fund,” they asserted.

According to Raffick Bahadoor, President of the Taxi Operators Union, taxi drivers will not yield to the NLTA’s threats.
