A 55-year-old British tourist tragically drowned in Mauritius after going for a swim in “rough seas” just hours after arriving on the island.

The man, who had landed in Mauritius on Sunday (14 April), was reportedly staying at the Henessy Park Hotel in Ebène.

According to reports, the man went for a swim in Flic en Flac lagoon where he got into trouble in the choppy waters.

A French national on a boat spotted the man struggling and managed to drag his body out of the lagoon. Despite efforts to revive him on shore, the man was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

The sea in the lagoon was reportedly rough with heavy swells throughout the day, possibly contributing to the tragic accident.

The man was scheduled to leave Mauritius on Friday (19 April), but it is unclear if he was traveling alone or with others.

A spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) stated, “We are supporting the family of a British man who has died in Mauritius and are in contact with the local authorities.” Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the victim during this difficult time.

Last Sunday was marked by a series of tragic accidents related to rough seas that claimed six lives.
