Sea Swells: 3 Drowned & 3 Missing, Tragic Sunday

This last Sunday was a day marked by a series of tragic accidents related to rough seas that claimed six lives.

The first two identified victims went missing at 8am yesterday morning. Damien Joachim Deruisseau, a 28-year-old accountant from Quatre-Bornes, and his friend Agnès Descombes, a 27-year-old educator from Rose-Hill, had been camping with a group of friends at Savinia Beach near Le Souffleur in the South since Saturday.

The tragedy struck when a huge wave swept the rock they were on, carrying them into the sea.

L’Escalier Police, the National Coast Guard, and the police helicopter were mobilized throughout the day on Sunday.

In addition, 70-year-old Jean Rabot, a resident of Quartier-Militaire, found himself in trouble in the Belle-Mare lagoon.

Beachgoers attempted to rescue him, but to no avail. In Flic-en-Flac in the West, another victim was reported, but their identity remains unknown and they may be a foreigner.

Two young individuals from Lallmatie were also caught in violent waves on Îlot Sancho in the South.

As of Monday, only the lifeless body of 29-year-old Kooshil Conhye had been found. Search efforts continued until nightfall to locate Kinal Conhye, 18.

It should be noted that meteorological authorities had issued a high swells warning effective from 4am Sunday until Tuesday, emphasizing the importance of avoiding beaches and the sea.
